Land’s End

There are few places in England quite like Land’s End. The most westerly point on the British mainland, this dramatic granite headland is where the Atlantic finally meets the cliffs of West Cornwall in a spectacle that never quite loses its power – no matter how many times you’ve seen it, or what the weather is doing when you arrive.

The landmark signpost, the sheer vertiginous height of the cliffs, and that unmistakable sense of standing at the very edge of the known world make Land’s End a worthwhile pilgrimage in almost any conditions. On a clear day the views are extraordinary; on a wild, stormy one they are something else entirely. Either way, it earns its place on any West Cornwall itinerary.

Timing your visit well is worth thinking about. The crowds thin considerably outside of school holidays, and a weekday visit in spring or autumn can be a genuinely quiet and moving experience — just you, the cliffs, and the open Atlantic stretching away to the horizon. It’s a very different place from the busy summer version, and many visitors find it all the more memorable for it.

For those who enjoy coastal walking, Land’s End is also the starting point for one of the most dramatic stretches of the South West Coast Path. The route south towards Porthcurno is among the finest cliff-top walking in all of Cornwall, and the walk to the Minack Theatre can be completed from here in either direction — making for a truly spectacular half-day out. Guests staying in luxury apartment accommodation in Mousehole, Cornwall are ideally placed to make the most of this entire breathtaking corner of the peninsula.

Bookings are available for parking and various visitor experiences at Land’s End throughout the year, with the site open daily.
