Penzance
Penzance
The principal town of West Penwith, Penzance is far more than just a gateway – it’s a place of genuine character, rich history, and a quietly thriving independent spirit that sets it apart from many Cornish towns of its size. Just a short drive from luxury apartment accommodation in Mousehole, Cornwall, it makes for an outstanding half-day or full-day out at any point during your stay.
The historic high street is lined with excellent independent shops, and the food scene has developed impressively in recent years – from a vibrant Thursday and Saturday farmers’ market to some of the best coffee and casual dining in the region. A morning that takes in the market, a visit to the local Tate gallery, coffee at Bakka, and lunch overlooking the harbour is, frankly, close to perfect.
The jewel in Penzance’s seafront crown is the magnificent Jubilee Pool – one of the finest art deco tidal lidos in the United Kingdom, and one of the most extraordinary outdoor swimming experiences you’ll find anywhere in the country. Restored and reopened in 2016, it now features a geothermally heated pool section alongside the original seawater lido, making it a genuinely unique destination in its own right. On a clear day, swimming here with views across Mount’s Bay is an experience that’s hard to forget.
Penzance is also the departure point for both ferry and helicopter connections to the Isles of Scilly – making it the perfect launchpad if you’re considering adding a day trip to those remarkable islands to your itinerary.
Bookings are available for the Jubilee Pool, the Isles of Scilly ferry and helicopter services, and various events and exhibitions at Tate St Ives’ Penzance outpost – advance reservation is recommended during the summer season.
