Walking from Mousehole – The South West Coast Path
Mousehole sits at one of the finest stretches of the entire South West Coast Path, and the clifftop walks directly from the village are among the most rewarding in Cornwall. Whether you’re an experienced hiker looking for a challenging full-day route or simply after a gentle morning stroll with exceptional views, there is something here for every pace and every ability – and for guests staying in luxury apartment accommodation in Mousehole, Cornwall, it all begins quite literally from the doorstep.
The paths are particularly magical in spring, when the cliff edges come alive with sea campion, thrift, and wild garlic, and the air carries that unmistakable mixture of salt and blossom that defines this corner of the Cornish coast at its best.
Mousehole to Lamorna Cove
The jewel in the crown of local walking, the route south to Lamorna Cove – approximately three miles one way – is one of those walks that tends to stay with you long after you’ve returned home. The path climbs from the village onto granite cliffs above startlingly turquoise water, with the Lizard Peninsula stretching away to the east and Mount’s Bay glittering below. It descends eventually into the sheltered wooded valley of Lamorna, where a beautiful cove and a cheerful pub provide the perfect excuse to pause and take stock. Return via the inland footpath through fields for a change of scenery, or take the coast path back for the full drama of the views.
Mousehole to Newlyn and Penzance
Heading north towards Newlyn and Penzance is equally rewarding, and offers a fascinating counterpoint to the wilder southern route. The mile-long path to Newlyn follows the harbour road before climbing briefly above the old fishery buildings, offering a compelling perspective on one of England’s great working ports – one that has supplied London’s fish markets since the Victorian era. From Newlyn, the route continues for a further mile along the promenade into Penzance, where the magnificent art deco Jubilee Pool lido and an excellent selection of independent cafés make a very fine lunch stop indeed.
The Raginnis Hill Circuit
For a shorter but equally beautiful outing, the path from Mousehole up to Raginnis Hill offers elevated, panoramic views across the whole of Mount’s Bay – from Penlee Point all the way to St Michael’s Mount. It’s a wonderful half-morning walk that delivers a remarkable amount of reward for relatively modest effort, and a perfect introduction to the walking on offer around the village.
A few practical notes worth bearing in mind: pack waterproofs even in summer, and sensible footwear is essential on the coastal sections. OS Explorer Map 102 (Land’s End) covers all of the routes described here and is available in the village shop.
Bookings are available year-round at Polvellan Heights – so whether you’re visiting in spring for the wildflowers, summer for the long evenings on the cliff path, or autumn for the dramatic light and quieter trails, the walking around Mousehole is always extraordinary.
